A field guide

Settle in.
Start watching.

Getting started with Torimado, an iPhone camera for birdwatching through a spotting scope or monocular.

At the eyepiece

  1. Mount and align.

Focus the scope by eye, then fit the phone adapter. Centre the eyepiece circle in the camera view.

  2. Find focus.

Use AF, or move the MF slider yourself. AF-L holds the focus position and hands over to MF.

  3. See the sharp edges.

Turn on Peak to mark sharp edges in red. Use EV to make the picture brighter or darker.

  4. Keep the moment before.

In Settings → Photo button → Before I press, choose a capture window. Press Photos for frames around your press, or Clip for a short video.

A few useful answers.

How far back can I capture?

Choose up to 10 seconds before your press. The camera must already be running, with Before I press above none. Under pressure, the app can reduce the buffer to keep going.

How do I take a full-resolution still or RAW?

Set Before I press to none. Photos then takes a still rather than extracting video frames. RAW is available where your iPhone supports it.

Does pinching change my photograph?

Pinching magnifies the screen only. Double tap to return. The 1× 2× 4×… buttons change the camera zoom and the photograph.

Does Torimado identify species?

No. Detection helps autofocus follow a bird; it does not identify its species. See which scenes detection is designed for.

How do I set the Trap?

Frame the place where you expect a bird to arrive, then press Trap. Watching means it is armed. In Settings → Trap, choose Photos, Clip or Until it leaves, and the capture timing. Check your first captures when setting up.

How do I keep recording?

Press Record, then Stop when you are finished. Tap 🌙 to blank the screen while recording; tap anywhere to bring it back.

What happens if the phone gets hot?

Torimado reduces frame rate, then picture size, then the seconds before the press. It explains the change and restores your settings when it can. If it must stop, it saves what it has. Act on storage and temperature notices.

Can I keep and share a sighting record?

Add notes to a capture and export records as CSV or JSON. Location is rounded by default when available. Check the file and its metadata before sharing a sensitive location.
